We are close to the road and want the view but not the road noise. Does a picture window help with sound?
It does, more than most windows. Triple-pane glass and a fixed frame with no operating gaps cut down the road noise better than an older single-pane or a window that opens, because there is no moving joint for sound to slip through. You keep the full river view and the room gets noticeably quieter.
Do picture windows open?
No — they’re fixed, which is what makes them so efficient and gives them the biggest glass area. Pair them with casements or double-hungs alongside if you want ventilation.
