My 1990s Mason gutters overflow in a hard rain even when they look clear. Why?

Do I really need gutter guards?
If you have trees near the house, guards save you from cleaning gutters twice a year and prevent the clogs that cause overflow and foundation issues. They’re optional but most of our customers add them.
What size gutters should I get?
