The 1950s ranches and capes across 45230 were built on concrete block, with small basement openings set right into the wall at grade. Those original sashes are thin, and after seventy years plenty are painted shut, rusted, or just easy to push in. The hall bathrooms in these homes usually still have their small factory window fogging up along the exterior wall.
We replace those openings with mortared glass block, sealed and flashed so the daylight comes through but the view and the weather do not. The panel is far harder to break through than the old sash, and it never needs paint or repair the way steel and wood do. If the basement or laundry needs air, we build in an operable or dryer vent. For those old grade-level sashes, glass block is a solid upgrade. It replaces a thin, easy-to-breach window with a mortared panel that keeps the daylight and holds up far better. We can set a vent into it if that basement needs airflow.
