Garden Windows in Over-the-Rhine

Over-the-Rhine's historic buildings have kitchens tucked into tall, narrow floor plans, and a garden window brings light and a herb shelf to the one over the sink. We box a greenhouse out with glass on three sides. Call (513) 657-2471.

Over-the-Rhine

Garden Windows for Over-the-Rhine homes

Over-the-Rhine in 45202 holds one of the country's densest stretches of 19th-century Italianate buildings, and behind those brick facades the kitchens are often deep, narrow, and short on daylight. The window over the sink in a rehabbed OTR unit is frequently the only one in the room, and a plain flat sash wastes it. A garden window makes that single opening do far more, boxing out with glass on the top and sides to draw light into a long kitchen and give a city cook a shelf for herbs.

Bulldog garden windows are built to project from the wall like a small greenhouse, glazed overhead and on both sides, with a built-in shelf for potted plants and kitchen odds and ends. The side panels open as vents, useful in a tight urban kitchen, and the triple-pane Low-E glass with argon keeps the box comfortable in a building with old masonry walls. We flash and insulate the frame so the draft and condensation problems common in these rehabs stay gone. Our crews measure and install, and the lifetime warranty covers both the product and the labor.

Garden Windows

A Sunny Shelf for Herbs and Light

Garden windows box out from the wall like a small greenhouse, with a shelf for plants and side vents for airflow. They’re a favorite over kitchen sinks, turning a plain window into a sunny spot for herbs and a brighter room.

Want the bigger picture? Pair it with replacement windows or a new entry door, and ask about rolling it into one 0%-for-24-months project. For efficiency ratings, the Energy Star program is a good reference.

Common questions

Garden Windows FAQs

I have a rehabbed OTR unit with historic requirements. Can you install a garden window that still fits the building?

Usually, but the details matter in a historic district. We size the projection and select trim and a frame profile that work with the existing masonry opening, and we can talk through any guidelines before we order. The goal is a garden window that adds light and a plant shelf without fighting the building's character.

Where do garden windows go?

Almost always over the kitchen sink, where the projecting shelf and extra light do the most good. They can go elsewhere, but the kitchen is the classic spot.

Do garden windows open?

The side panels typically open to vent, while the front and top are fixed glass to hold in heat and let in light.

Are garden windows energy efficient?

Modern ones are, with insulated framing and triple-pane glass. Older garden windows were often drafty — ours are flashed and sealed to current standards.
