Over-the-Rhine in ZIP 45202 holds one of the country's largest runs of 19th-century Italianate buildings, most raised between the 1850s and 1880s around Vine Street and Findlay Market. Those tall Italianate facades were designed around double-hung windows, and even in the renovated units the original sashes stick, rattle, and leak heat through single-pane glass. On upper floors they are a chore to reach and a source of draft off the street.
Bulldog installs double-hungs into these tight urban openings, custom-fit to walls that predate square. Both sashes tilt in, so the outside glass of a fourth-floor unit cleans from inside with no lift or ladder over the sidewalk. Open the top for airflow or the bottom for a breeze, and triple-pane Low-E glass with argon fill keeps the unit comfortable while quieting the street. My OTR unit is on the top floor and the old windows stick and leak. Can Bulldog work in a historic building?
We do this regularly in Over-the-Rhine. The 19th-century walls here are rarely square, so we custom-fit each double-hung to your actual opening. Both sashes tilt in so you can clean the outside glass from inside, which matters when you are several floors above Vine Street.
Are double-hung windows energy efficient?
Modern double-hungs are. Ours use triple-pane Low-E glass, argon fill, and insulated frames with a tight weatherstrip — a world apart from the drafty single-pane double-hungs they usually replace.
