Built into the slopes, many of these basements have below-grade openings on the downhill side where ground water pressure is real. Basement Hopper Windows FAQs
Our Park Hills basement is dug into the hillside and one wall gets water pressure. Does that matter for the window?
It does, and it's a good reason to seal that opening properly. The hopper's multi-point lock and weatherstrip pull the sash tight against the frame, which holds back ground water far better than a rusted steel sash. Combined with the vinyl frame that won't corrode, it's built to take the damp a hillside wall deals with.
What is a hopper window?
A window hinged at the bottom that tilts inward at the top to open. It’s the standard style for basement and other small below-grade openings.
Do hopper windows keep water out?
When closed they seal tight against the frame. We also flash the opening properly so wind-driven rain and ground moisture stay outside.
Can hopper windows be an egress exit?
Standard hoppers are usually too small for egress. If you need a code-compliant basement egress window, we can spec one — just ask at the consultation.
