Mount Auburn sits just above downtown in 45219 and holds a heavy concentration of large Victorian homes from the 1860s through the 1890s. Those houses have deep cellars with thick stone and block walls, and the basement window openings were built small and set low. The frames in them are typically the original steel hoppers, now rusted at the corners, or wood units that have rotted, and both let cold, damp air into what are often big, hard-to-heat basements.
Bulldog's basement hopper fits that older construction cleanly. We custom-fit a fusion-welded, multi-chamber vinyl frame to the stone or block opening, so it seals without forcing a stock size where it doesn't belong. The bottom-hinged sash tilts inward to vent the damp off the top and clean from inside, the multi-point lock and weatherstrip hold it tight against drafts and pests, and triple-pane Low-E glass with argon puts a proper thermal break on a cold Victorian cellar wall. Vinyl won't rust or rot the way the century-old originals have.

A hopper is essentially an awning flipped upside down — it hinges at the bottom and opens inward from the top. That makes it ideal for basements, where it vents moist air, cleans easily from inside, and seals tight against drafts and pests.

Basement Hopper Windows FAQs
My Mount Auburn Victorian has huge basement openings in a stone wall. Are those too big for a hopper?
A standard hopper covers most basement openings, but some Victorian cellars do have oversized ones. We measure on site, and if the opening is large we can build to fit or talk through options. Keep in mind a standard hopper is usually too small to count as egress, so if that opening leads to a finished bedroom we can spec a code-compliant egress window instead.
What is a hopper window?
A window hinged at the bottom that tilts inward at the top to open. It’s the standard style for basement and other small below-grade openings.
Do hopper windows keep water out?
When closed they seal tight against the frame. We also flash the opening properly so wind-driven rain and ground moisture stay outside.
Can hopper windows be an egress exit?
Standard hoppers are usually too small for egress. If you need a code-compliant basement egress window, we can spec one — just ask at the consultation.
